Summary

Transdermal nicotine patches effectively reduced postoperative pain in non-smokers for up to five days. However, the nicotine treatment did not decrease the need for opioid pain medication or reduce opioid-related side effects.

Optimizing Photoneuromodulation Techniques to Evaluate the Role of Green Light-Emitting Diodes in Pain Management

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the analgesic effect of transdermal nicotine patches applied preoperatively in non-smoking patients.
  • To assess pain reduction using a numerical rating scale (NRS) post-surgery.
  • To examine secondary outcomes including pain medication use, hemodynamics, nausea, and sedation.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 40 general surgery patients.
  • Transdermal nicotine patches (0, 5, 10, or 15 mg) were applied immediately before surgery.
  • Pain was assessed using NRS for the first hour and five days post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • Nicotine treatment significantly lowered pain scores in the first hour (P = 0.003) and for five days (P = 0.03) compared to placebo.
  • No additional benefit was observed with nicotine doses exceeding 5 mg.

Conclusions:
