Summary

Local microwave hyperthermia showed limited efficacy as a standalone treatment for prostate cancer. Combining it with epirubicin did not significantly improve outcomes compared to epirubicin alone.

Context:

  • Prostate cancer treatment remains a significant challenge, particularly for hormone-resistant and metastatic forms.
  • Hyperthermia, a method of raising tissue temperature, has been explored as an adjunct cancer therapy.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of local microwave hyperthermia as monotherapy and in combination with epirubicin for prostate carcinoma.
  • To assess histological changes and treatment response in patients with newly diagnosed and advanced prostate cancer.

Summary:

  • A clinical trial investigated microwave hyperthermia (915 MHz) in 20 newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients, observing hyperemia and edema but no tumor necrosis.
  • In 10 patients with metastatic prostate cancer (4 untreated, 6 hormone-resistant), an 8-week regimen of weekly epirubicin followed by hyperthermia showed limited efficacy.
  • No significant changes in tumor size or metastases were observed in untreated patients. Hormone-resistant cases showed progression or stable disease, with only 2 patients demonstrating tumor regression. DNA ploidy remained unchanged.

Impact:

  • Hyperthermia is currently considered unsuitable as a monotherapy for prostate cancer.
  • The combination of epirubicin and hyperthermia did not demonstrate superior efficacy compared to epirubicin monotherapy.
  • Further research is warranted to explore alternative cytotoxic agents and hyperthermia application methods for prostate cancer treatment.
