Liver Regeneration

The liver is an important organ in vertebrates that plays an essential role in metabolism. It is also responsible for storing and redistributing nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins in the body. Additionally, the liver releases bile salts which are critical for digesting food and eliminating toxic metabolites from the body.
Cells of Liver
The liver comprises four major types of cells— hepatocytes, stellate, Kupffer, and sinusoidal endothelial cells. The hepatocytes are large...

Summary

True liver teratomas are rare tumors. This case report details a benign liver teratoma diagnosed via computed tomography (CT) and confirmed surgically.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • True liver teratomas are exceptionally rare, with limited documentation in radiological literature.
  • Most reported teratomas involving the liver are secondary, arising from adjacent structures.
  • This highlights the rarity and diagnostic challenge of primary hepatic teratomas.

Observation:

  • A 27-year-old woman presented with an incidentally discovered complex liver mass on computed tomography (CT).
  • Imaging revealed characteristic features including macroscopic fat, a central soft tissue component, and calcification.
  • These findings suggested a neoplastic etiology within the liver parenchyma.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection was performed for the complex liver mass.

  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a benign liver teratoma.
  • This represents a rare instance of a primary hepatic teratoma.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the understanding of rare hepatic neoplasms.
    • Accurate radiological characterization is crucial for diagnosing liver teratomas.
    • Surgical intervention remains the definitive treatment for symptomatic or diagnostic confirmation.
