Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between age and blue-green lens autofluorescence (AF) in healthy individuals.
  • To assess the utility of AF parameters as biomarkers for lens aging.

Main Methods:

  • Measured blue-green AF (495 nm/520 nm) in 43 healthy volunteers (aged 6-86 years).
  • Utilized a specialized instrument to generate an AF profile with anterior/posterior peaks and a central plateau.
  • Defined maximum AF as anterior peak height and lens transmission index (LTI) using peak ratio.

Main Results:

  • Both maximum AF and LTI showed strong positive correlations with age.
  • Age accounted for over 90% of the variation in maximum AF.
  • Age explained nearly 70% of the variation in LTI.

Conclusions:

  • Blue-green lens AF and derived transmission index are significantly correlated with age.
  • These AF parameters show potential as objective measures for assessing lens aging in vivo.
