Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the cognitive characteristics differentiating successful self-regulators (SSRs) from unsuccessful self-regulators (USRs) of physical activity.
  • To explore the neural correlates of successful and unsuccessful physical activity self-regulation.

Main Methods:

  • Two studies were conducted involving intention setting, objective physical activity monitoring (accelerometry), cognitive testing (IQ), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
  • Participants included individuals motivated to increase physical activity.
  • fMRI data were collected during a Stroop task to assess cognitive resource recruitment.

Main Results:

  • SSRs demonstrated significantly higher general cognitive ability (IQ) compared to USRs, independent of attitudes or conscientiousness.
  • The IQ advantage for SSRs was replicated in Study 2, showing a full standard deviation difference.
  • fMRI revealed distinct patterns of brain activation: USRs showed greater recruitment in anterior cingulate and orbitofrontal cortex, while SSRs showed greater recruitment in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during a cognitive task.

Conclusions:

  • Higher general cognitive ability is associated with successful self-regulation of physical activity.
  • Neural differences in prefrontal cortex regions may underlie variations in self-regulatory success for physical activity.
