Background:

  • A 41-year-old male developed decreased visual acuity three months post-LASIK.
  • The patient had a history of viral conjunctivitis treated with a bandage contact lens.
  • Examination revealed epithelial ingrowth under the corneal flap with associated edema.

Findings:

  • Surgical intervention involved lifting the flap, removing ingrown epithelium, and repositioning the flap.
  • Post-operative management included topical corticosteroids for diffuse lamellar keratitis.
  • Visual acuity improved to 20/20 with no interface opacities at two months.

Implications:

  • Viral infections may precipitate epithelial ingrowth following LASIK surgery.
  • Careful examination and consideration of flap complications are essential in post-LASIK patients with viral conjunctivitis.
  • This case highlights a potential, albeit rare, complication pathway after LASIK.
