A benign endometrial condition, immunoreactive endometritis, mimics lymphoma but is not malignant. This study identified 29 cases among chronic endometritis, with no evidence of hematologic disorders after long-term follow-up.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Pathology
  • Hematopathology
  • Immunopathology

Background:

  • Endometrial lymphoid proliferation can resemble malignant lymphoma.
  • Previous literature reported only seven cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and characterize a benign endometrial lymphoid proliferation.
  • To differentiate this condition from malignant lymphoma.
  • To establish the term 'immunoreactive endometritis'.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 11,648 endometrial specimens.
  • Histological examination for lymphoid proliferation in chronic endometritis.
  • Long-term clinical and hematologic follow-up of affected patients.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • 29 cases of lymphoid proliferation were identified in 287 chronic endometritis cases (2.5%).
  • No evidence of malignant hematologic disorder was found after a median follow-up of 68 months.
  • Histological changes persisted up to 12 months in ten patients.

Conclusions:

  • 'Immunoreactive endometritis' is a benign condition.
  • It does not appear to be associated with malignant hematologic disorders or infectious diseases.
  • The condition is characterized by persistent lymphoid changes.
