Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Biomechanics
  • Trauma research

Background:

  • Intertrochanteric fractures are common hip injuries.
  • Current fixation methods have limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the biomechanical stability of four fixation methods for Type IIIa intertrochanteric fractures.

Main Methods:

  • Preserved adult cadaver femurs were used.
  • Type IIIa intertrochanteric fractures were created and fixed with Percalcar Steinmann's pins, Knowle's pins, a nail plate, or an angle plate.
  • Load-to-failure and fatigue tests were performed.

Main Results:

  • Percalcar Steinmann's pins demonstrated the highest loading limit (150 kg) and fatigue resistance.
  • The nail plate (70 kg) and angle plate (40 kg) showed significantly lower stability.
  • Analysis revealed optimal load distribution and reduced shearing forces with Percalcar Steinmann's pins.

Conclusions:

  • Percalcar Steinmann's pins offer superior biomechanical stability for Type IIIa intertrochanteric fractures compared to the other tested methods.
  • This fixation technique may improve outcomes for hip fracture patients.
