Background:

  • Prior research suggests a link between reading problems and visual accommodation.
  • Few studies have specifically examined accommodative function in children with reading difficulties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize monocular accommodative amplitude, relative accommodation, and binocular accommodative facility.
  • To investigate these functions in healthy, non-dyslexic primary school children experiencing reading difficulties.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 87 poor readers and 32 controls (ages 8-13).
  • Measurements included negative relative accommodation (NRA), positive relative accommodation (PRA), monocular accommodative amplitude (MAA), and binocular accommodative facility (BAF).
  • Standard optometric equipment and methods were employed.

Main Results:

  • Poor readers exhibited significantly lower monocular accommodative amplitude (p < 0.001) compared to controls.
  • Binocular accommodative facility was also significantly lower in poor readers (p < 0.05).
  • Relative accommodation measures (NRA and PRA) did not differ between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Children with reading difficulties demonstrate reduced accommodative amplitude and binocular accommodative facility.
  • Optometric assessment of accommodative function is recommended for children with below-average reading levels.
  • Findings contribute to understanding the visual basis of reading challenges.
