Background:

Korean red ginseng (unskinned Panax ginseng) is a widely used herbal remedy.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition with various treatment options.
Herbal remedies are increasingly explored for managing ED.

Purpose of the Study:

To systematically review and evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness of Korean red ginseng in treating erectile dysfunction.
To assess the quality of existing randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on red ginseng for ED.

Main Methods:

Conducted systematic searches across 20 electronic databases without language restrictions.
Included all randomized clinical studies (RCTs) comparing red ginseng to placebo for ED treatment.
Assessed the methodological quality of included studies using the Jadad score.

Main Results:

Seven RCTs met inclusion criteria, with an average low methodological quality.
Meta-analysis of six RCTs (n=349) showed a significant positive effect of red ginseng on ED (RR 2.40; p < 0.00001).
Subgroup analysis indicated beneficial effects in psychogenic ED (n=135, RR 2.05; p = 0.001).

Conclusions:

The reviewed RCTs provide suggestive evidence for red ginseng's effectiveness in treating erectile dysfunction.
Limitations include a low total number of RCTs, small sample sizes, and low methodological quality.
More rigorous studies are necessary to draw definitive conclusions on red ginseng for ED treatment.
