Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Lymph node status is critical for vulvar cancer prognosis.
  • Groin lymphadenectomy, the current standard, causes significant morbidity.
  • Sentinel node biopsy is established in breast cancer care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the feasibility and benefits of sentinel node detection in vulvar cancer.
  • To discuss the current status and potential of this technique.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature and studies on sentinel node biopsy in vulvar cancer.
  • Analysis of the technique's application and outcomes.

Main Results:

  • The sentinel node technique has been studied for 15 years in vulvar cancer.

  • Small patient numbers due to low incidence have hindered consensus.
  • Feasibility and potential benefits are highlighted.
  • Conclusions:

    • Sentinel node biopsy shows promise for improving vulvar cancer staging.
    • Wider adoption requires further evidence and consensus building.
    • This technique may offer a less morbid alternative to groin lymphadenectomy.
