    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Context:

    • Carcinoid tumors represent a diverse group of neuroendocrine neoplasms.
    • Understanding the clinical spectrum and outcomes of carcinoids is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose:

    • To review the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term outcomes of carcinoid tumors across various organs.
    • To assess the prevalence of benign, potentially malignant, and malignant carcinoids in the studied cohort.

    Summary:

    • The study included 24 patients with carcinoid tumors, classifying them as benign (2), potentially malignant (2), or malignant (20).
    • Six patients presented with a combination of carcinoid and other cancers.
    • Radical surgery was undertaken in 17 patients, with 9 deaths reported, 3 attributed to unrelated cancers.

    Impact:

    • Highlights the aggressive nature of carcinoid tumors in a significant portion of patients.
    • Underscores the importance of considering co-existing malignancies in carcinoid patients.
    • Provides data on surgical outcomes and mortality in carcinoid tumor management.
