Summary

Endothelin-1 causes significant basilar artery constriction and cell damage, suggesting its role in cerebral vasospasm. Autologous blood injection also induced vasospasm and histological changes.

Background:

  • Cerebral vasospasm is a serious complication following subarachnoid hemorrhage.
  • The role of endothelin-1 in the pathogenesis of vasospasm requires further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the histological changes in arteries constricted by endothelin-1 compared to vasospasm induced by autologous blood.
  • To determine the involvement of endothelin-1 in the development of cerebral vasospasm.

Main Methods:

  • Three groups of animals were used: sham-operated, endothelin-1 infusion for 7 days, and double autologous blood injection.
  • Angiography, histological examination, and immunohistochemistry were employed to assess basilar artery changes.
  • Endothelin-1 levels were specifically examined in endothelial cells.
