Summary

Basic stimulation (BS) is a nursing approach for intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Its use in Danish ICUs is limited, depending on nurse interest and requiring more support for systematic implementation.

Background:

  • Basic stimulation (BS) is a multimodal approach originating in Germany for patients with multiple handicaps.
  • Adapted for nursing in the 1980s and critical care nursing in the 1990s, BS is gaining traction in German-speaking countries and Scandinavia.
  • Limited information exists on BS application outside Germany.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the extent and application of basic stimulation (BS) in Danish intensive care units (ICUs) in 2006.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, descriptive, qualitative, multicentre study design.
  • Data collected via key-informant telephone interviews with 10 participants.

Main Results:

  • BS use in Danish ICUs was found to be dependent on individual nurses' interest.
  • The concept was rarely utilized, with limited practitioners, patients, or elements of the technique applied at most units.
  • BS tenets align with conventional nursing and general healthcare practices.

Conclusions:

  • Basic stimulation (BS) shows potential for critical care nursing.
  • Implementation in Danish ICUs was unsystematic, indicating a need for increased management support, systematic integration, and further clinical research.
