Summary

Quantitative multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) analysis of pulmonary nodules using compactness and intranodular CT number shows potential for differentiating diseases. However, the long-short ratio was not a significant differentiator.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the utility of quantitative multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) parameters in differentiating solitary pulmonary nodules.
  • To evaluate the long-short ratio, compactness, and intranodular CT number for nodule classification.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective analysis of 70 solitary pulmonary nodules (5-30 mm) using MDCT and 3D imaging.
  • Statistical analysis of three quantitative parameters across five disease categories: hamartoma, organizing pneumonia, adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and metastasis.

Main Results:

  • The long-short ratio did not significantly differentiate between the five diseases.
  • Compactness showed significant differences in five disease pairs (P < 0.05).
  • Intranodular CT number demonstrated significant differences in three disease pairs (P < 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Compactness and intranodular CT number offer some value in differentiating pulmonary nodules.
  • Current parameters are insufficient for complete differentiation of all pulmonary solid nodules.
