Quality of life in subjects with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment

Purpose:
To assess the vision health-related quality of life (VRQoL) and self-rated functional status in subjects with Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).
Methods:
163 RRD subjects were studied. A Control group with mild eye conditions was also set. The VRQoL of these 2 groups were assessed by the Chinese-version low vision quality of life questionnaire (CLVQOL), utility value calculated by Time tradeoff method, and 3 global self-assessment scales were used to reflect subjects' perceptions of their visual function.
Results:
The mean CLVQOL scores were significantly lower in the RRD group as compared to the Control group. The highest subscales score decrement was found in "Psychological adjustment." The average utility value of the RRD group is 0.71. Independently significant predictors of VRQoL were weighted average LogMAR visual acuity and retinal quadrants detached in extent.
Conclusions:
RRD subjects suffered with substantial impairment in VRQoL, especially the mental health. Different aspects of scotomas result in different VRQoL impairment.
