    Summary

Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) therapy did not significantly alter chromatid-type chromosome aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes. However, HBO significantly reduced chromosome-type aberrations by three times in patients and volunteers.

    Area of Science:

    • Cytogenetics
    • Oxygen therapy
    • Cellular biology

    Background:

    • Peripheral blood lymphocytes are crucial for immune response.
    • Chromosome aberrations can indicate cellular damage or genetic instability.
    • Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) is used therapeutically for various conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of a hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) course on chromosome aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes.
    • To assess potential genotoxic or protective effects of HBO therapy at the chromosomal level.

    Main Methods:

    • Peripheral blood samples were collected from 7 patients with diverse pathologies and 3 healthy volunteers.
    • Chromosome aberration analysis was performed on lymphocytes before and after a course of HBO therapy.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Frequencies of chromatid-type and chromosome-type aberrations were quantified.
  • Main Results:

    • The frequency of chromatid-type chromosome aberrations remained largely unchanged post-HBO.
    • A significant threefold decrease in the frequency of chromosome-type aberrations was observed after the HBO course.
    • These findings were consistent across both patient and healthy volunteer groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Hyperbaric oxygenation therapy appears to have a beneficial effect on reducing chromosome-type aberrations.
    • HBO may exert a protective influence on lymphocyte chromosomes, potentially mitigating certain types of DNA damage.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying HBO's effect on chromosomal stability.
