California nurses received specialized palliative care training to improve end-of-life care. This statewide initiative demonstrated a commitment to enhancing care for dying patients, encouraging similar efforts nationwide.

Background:

A 2002 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report highlighted mediocre end-of-life care in most states, including California.
The report urged state-level action to enhance palliative care quality.

Purpose of the Study:

To implement and evaluate a statewide program enhancing end-of-life care education for 350 California nurses.
To serve as a model for state-level improvements in palliative care, as recommended by the RWJF report.

Main Methods:

The initiative utilized the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) "Train the Trainer" project.
Three training courses were conducted between October 2005 and March 2007 for 350 participating nurses across California.

Main Results:

Participants committed to a 12-month follow-up to assess the impact of training on institutional palliative care.
Findings from this California effort are reported as an example of intensive, state-level intervention.

Conclusions:

This study provides a model for statewide palliative care initiatives.
Encourages replication of such programs to improve end-of-life care nationally.
