    Summary

Maximizing contralateral hip flexion during the active knee extension test significantly reduces pelvic rotation. This finding enhances the active knee extension test

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopaedic and sports medicine
    • Physical therapy
    • Biomechanics

    Background:

    • Hamstring injuries are prevalent and recurrent in athletes.
    • Accurate assessment of hamstring muscle length is crucial for injury prevention and rehabilitation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the influence of contralateral hip flexion on pelvic rotation during the active knee extension test.
    • To determine the effect on ipsilateral active knee extension in the sagittal plane.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty-seven healthy subjects performed a modified active knee extension test.
    • The test was conducted in five positions of contralateral hip flexion.
    • Pelvic and knee joint angles were measured from videotaped recordings.

    Main Results:

    • The minimum pelvic rotation (5.5 degrees) was observed at maximum contralateral hip flexion.
    • Statistical analysis (p < .05) confirmed significant differences in pelvic rotation and knee extension across test positions.

    Conclusions:

    • Contralateral hip flexion effectively controls pelvic rotation during the active knee extension test.
    • This controlled movement allows the active knee extension test to serve as a reliable tool for assessing hamstring muscle length.
