Summary

Bone marrow trephine biopsies provide high-quality paraffin-embedded sections for diagnostic histopathology. These biopsies are superior to aspirates for assessing cellularity, tumor infiltration, and cell types in various hematological and non-hematological disorders.

Area of Science:

  • Histopathology
  • Hematopathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Bone marrow aspirates have limitations in evaluating marrow cellularity and infiltration patterns.
  • Diagnostic accuracy in hematological and non-hematological disorders can be improved with better biopsy techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the utility of bone marrow trephine biopsies in diagnostic histopathology.
  • To compare the diagnostic value of trephine biopsies versus aspirates.

Main Methods:

  • Processing of paraffin-embedded bone marrow trephine sections.
  • Histopathological examination of bone marrow biopsies.

Main Results:

  • Good quality paraffin-embedded sections are consistently obtainable from bone marrow trephines.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Trephine biopsies offer superior assessment of marrow cellularity, tumor infiltration extent and pattern, and cell type compared to aspirates.
  • Conclusions:

    • Bone marrow trephine biopsies are suitable for routine diagnostic histopathology.
    • Trephine biopsies are invaluable for diagnosing myelodysplasia, myeloproliferative neoplasms, lymphomas, leukaemias, and non-hematological disorders.
    • Increased utilization of bone marrow trephines will likely lead to further diagnostic advancements.
