Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra. Symptoms...

Nephrotic Syndrome III : Nursing Management

Nursing management for nephrotic syndrome adapts as the disease progresses, with strategies evolving to address advancing symptoms and complications.Early-Stage Management In the early stages, nursing interventions for nephrotic syndrome resemble those used in managing acute glomerulonephritis, focusing on symptom monitoring, fluid balance, and managing mild to moderate edema.Vital Signs: Regularly monitor blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, and temperature to promptly identify...

Cirrhosis I: Introduction

Cirrhosis is a chronic, irreversible liver disease characterized by the widespread replacement of healthy liver tissue with fibrotic scar tissue and the formation of regenerative nodules.Etiology of cirrhosisCirrhosis results from sustained liver injury that triggers progressive fibrosis and structural remodeling. The underlying causes are diverse, encompassing common and less frequent clinical conditions. Regardless of the origin, all causes lead to chronic inflammation, hepatocyte loss, and...

Summary

Sexual dysfunction is highly prevalent in women with fibromyalgia (FM), impacting 97% of patients. Depression severity was the main factor associated with this sexual dysfunction in FM patients.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Psychiatry
  • Sexual Health

Background:

  • Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties.
  • Sexual dysfunction is a common but often overlooked issue in patients with chronic illnesses.
  • Understanding the prevalence and associated factors of sexual dysfunction in FM is crucial for comprehensive patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in female patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
  • To assess the impact of fibromyalgia on sexual activity and overall sexual function.
  • To identify specific factors contributing to sexual dysfunction in this patient population.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 31 women with fibromyalgia, 20 healthy controls, and 26 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • Assessment of pain intensity using a 100-mm Visual Analog Scale (VAS).
  • Evaluation of anxiety and depression using the STAI and Beck Depression Inventory, respectively.
  • Measurement of sexual function using the Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire (CSFQ).

Main Results:

  • A significantly higher rate of sexual dysfunction was observed in both FM and RA patients compared to healthy controls.
  • Sexual dysfunction affected 97% of FM patients and 84% of RA patients.
  • Univariate analysis indicated associations between sexual dysfunction and age, marital status, work status, pain intensity, anxiety, and depression in FM patients.
  • Multivariate analysis revealed that only the intensity of depression was significantly associated with sexual dysfunction in FM patients.

Conclusions:

  • Sexual function is frequently and severely impaired in women with fibromyalgia.
  • The degree of depression is a key factor associated with sexual dysfunction in FM.
  • Recognizing and addressing sexual dysfunction within a multidisciplinary approach to FM management can enhance patients' quality of life.
