    Summary

Ankle taping and stabilizers did not significantly alter running mechanics in athletes. However, these devices did reduce variability in footfall timing compared to no ankle support.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomechanics
    • Sports Medicine
    • Orthopedics

    Background:

    • Athletic trainers frequently use ankle taping and stabilizers to prevent injuries.
    • Understanding the biomechanical effects of these interventions is crucial for optimizing athletic performance and safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the impact of the Gibney taping procedure and boot-type ankle stabilizers on ground reaction force (GRF) during running.
    • To compare the effects of these ankle stabilizing techniques in pre- and post-exercise conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight healthy female athletes performed ten running trials under five conditions: no appliance, Gibney taping (pre- and post-exercise), and boot stabilizer (pre- and post-exercise).
    • Ground reaction force data, including 34 descriptors, were collected and analyzed using multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA).

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences were observed in force or impulse variables across all tested conditions.
    • Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in variables related to the relative timing of footfall events.
    • The no-appliance condition exhibited consistently higher variability in measured parameters compared to conditions with ankle appliances.

    Conclusions:

    • Ankle taping and boot stabilizers did not significantly alter the primary biomechanical parameters of running in healthy athletes.
    • These devices may help reduce variability in footfall timing, potentially contributing to perceived stability.
    • The findings suggest that in normal running, ankle appliances may not substantially modify overall foot function.
