Summary

This case study shows successful staged tendon reconstruction for a zone II flexor tendon injury, even after an 18-year delay. The long interval did not negatively impact the final outcome.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Hand surgery
  • Tendon reconstruction

Background:

  • Zone II flexor tendon injuries require specialized surgical repair.
  • Delayed reconstruction presents unique challenges in achieving functional recovery.

Observation:

  • A patient with a zone II flexor tendon injury underwent staged reconstruction.
  • Hunter rod placement was followed by secondary tendon grafting 18 years later.

Findings:

  • The staged tendon reconstruction achieved a successful outcome despite a significant 18-year delay.
  • Prolonged intervals between initial injury and definitive reconstruction did not preclude a favorable result.

Implications:

  • This case suggests that delayed tendon reconstruction is a viable option for zone II injuries.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Extended intervals may not be a contraindication for successful flexor tendon repair and functional restoration.
