Background:

Physician dissatisfaction in Taiwan is rising due to stress, long hours, and societal distrust.
Restoring social trust in the medical profession is a critical concern.

Purpose of the Study:

To propose and evaluate a community-based medical curriculum in Taiwan.
To enhance medical students' skills and understanding of social trust in medicine.

Main Methods:

Implementation of a two-stage, community-based curriculum for over 800 medical students.
Utilizing community empowerment methodologies for structured self-learning experiences.

Main Results:

Students reported enhanced communication skills, confidence, and planning abilities.
Participants experienced a profound learning process, recognizing the importance of social trust.
The curriculum design facilitated self-learning and skill development.

Conclusions:

Community-based curriculum designs are crucial for reformed medical humanities education in Taiwan.
Medical humanities education, including community service, supports civil society and democratic development.
