Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate correlations between thyroid measures and PPD screening scores at 4 weeks postpartum.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 51 adult subjects.
  • Administered Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) prenatally and at 4 weeks postpartum.
  • Collected blood samples for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine4, thyroid peroxidase, and thyroglobulin at both intervals.

Main Results:

  • Higher serum TSH levels at 4 weeks postpartum correlated with higher EPDS scores.
  • Subjects with positive postnatal thyroid antibody tests were more likely to report higher EPDS scores.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated TSH levels and thyroid autoantibodies in the postpartum period may be associated with depressive symptoms.
  • These thyroid-related factors could contribute to the development of postpartum depression.
