Interventional Diagnostic Procedure: A Practical Guide for the Assessment of Coronary Vascular Function

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare bleeding complication rates after core needle biopsy in patients receiving anticoagulation therapy versus those not on anticoagulation.
  • To assess the overall safety of performing core needle breast biopsy in anticoagulated patients.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study analyzed 1,144 core needle biopsies performed between August 2004 and May 2007.
  • The study included 200 women on daily anticoagulant therapy (aspirin, warfarin, Excedrin) and 855 women not on anticoagulation.
  • Adverse reactions, including bruising and hematoma formation, were recorded and compared between groups.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant increase in bruising was observed in the anticoagulated group (34%) compared to the non-anticoagulated group (26.5%) (p = 0.035).

  • No clinically important bleeding complications were reported in either group.

Conclusions:

  • Performing core needle biopsy in patients on anticoagulation therapy is safe.
  • The increased rate of bruising in anticoagulated patients is not associated with clinically significant complications.
  • These findings support the continued use of core needle biopsy in patients requiring anticoagulation.
