Background:

  • Streptococcus mutans is a primary cause of dental caries and infective endocarditis.
  • S. mutans is classified into serotypes, including c, e, f, and k.
  • Serotype k strains are increasingly found in infective endocarditis patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate common properties of serotype k Streptococcus mutans strains.
  • To determine if these properties contribute to virulence in infective endocarditis.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 56 oral S. mutans strains, including 11 serotype k strains.
  • Western blotting to detect glucosyltransferases and cell-surface protein A (PA).
  • Assessment of cellular hydrophobicity and phagocytosis susceptibility.

  • All strains expressed glucosyltransferases.
  • Absence of PA expression was noted in 12 strains, with a high prevalence (7/12) in serotype k.
