Summary

Self-adhesive cements show limited resin penetration into dentin compared to etch-and-rinse or self-etching systems. These cements did not fully demineralize the smear layer, impacting dentin interaction.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials Engineering
  • Adhesive Dentistry

Background:

  • Resin cement diffusion into dentin is crucial for durable restorations.
  • Self-adhesive cements simplify clinical procedures by eliminating pre-treatment steps.
  • The interaction of self-adhesive cements with dentin requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare resin cement diffusion into dentin among different commercial adhesive systems.
  • To evaluate the interfacial characteristics of various resin cements bonded to dentin.
  • To assess the effectiveness of self-adhesive cements in demineralizing and infiltrating dentin.

Main Methods:

  • Luting composite cylinders onto mid-coronal dentin using etch-and-rinse, self-etching, and four self-adhesive cements.
  • Analyzing dentin/cement interfacial characteristics using Masson's trichrome staining.
  • Examining interfaces with scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Main Results:

  • Etch-and-rinse and self-etching systems showed partially infiltrated adhesive interfaces.
  • No hybrid layer or resin tag formation was observed with self-adhesive cements.
  • Self-adhesive cements exhibited limited decalcification and infiltration into dentin, failing to completely dissolve the smear layer.

Conclusions:

  • Significant differences exist in resin cement diffusion into dentin based on the luting system used.
  • Self-adhesive cements demonstrate less interaction with dentin compared to conventional systems.
  • The clinical implications of limited smear layer demineralization by self-adhesive cements warrant further study.
