Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy: Instrumentation01:26

Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy: Instrumentation

Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) is the common plasma source used in atomic emission spectroscopy (AES), a technique that detects and analyzes various elements in a sample. This method is often called inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).
There are three main types of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy  (ICP-AES) instruments: sequential, simultaneous multichannel, and Fourier transform instruments, with the latter being less commonly used.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomechanics
    • Kinesiology
    • Rehabilitation Engineering

    Background:

    • Traditional muscle torque measurement using Cybex II dynamometers often involves subjective interpretation of paper recordings.
    • Objective and reliable quantification of muscle strength is crucial for clinical assessment and research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe a novel mechanical system for accurate and objective muscle torque measurement.
    • To evaluate the reliability of this new system compared to conventional methods.

    Main Methods:

    • Integration of a Cybex II dynamometer with a microprocessor-based data acquisition system.
    • Digitalization of analog signals from the dynamometer to eliminate subjective reading errors.
    • Testing the system's reliability using dead weights.

    Main Results:

    • The system accurately digitalizes muscle torque data from the Cybex II dynamometer.
    • Reliability testing with dead weights demonstrated a high correlation (r = 0.99, P <= 0.05).
    • The data acquisition system proved to be accurate instrumentation for measuring loads.

    Conclusions:

    • The described system provides an objective and reliable method for recording muscle torque.
    • This advancement improves the precision of biomechanical measurements in clinical and research settings.
    • The system enhances the validity of data obtained from Cybex II dynamometer assessments.
