Summary

This study describes a successful training model for ethical research conduct, enhancing institutional review board (IRB) capacity in Peru and Latin America. The program has trained 927 participants from 12 countries since 2004.

Increasing international research necessitates stronger host country Institutional Review Board (IRB) capacity.
Ensuring research ethics and relevance to local customs is crucial for global health initiatives.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe a successful training model for ethical research conduct.
To enhance the capacity of IRBs and researchers in Latin America.

Main Methods:

A blended learning approach combining distance education, interactive courses, and expert instructors.
Collaboration between U.S. Naval Medical Research Center Detachment, University of Washington, and NIH Clinical Bioethics Department.
Training conducted under the Peruvian National Institute of Health (INS) since 2004.

Main Results:

927 participants from 12 Latin American countries have been trained.
The model successfully enhanced ethical research conduct training capacity.
Established a sustainable collaboration for ongoing research ethics education.

Conclusions:

The described training model is effective in building research ethics capacity in Latin America.
International collaborations can successfully address global health research training needs.
The program demonstrates a sustainable approach to IRB capacity building.
