Hearing

When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Summary

Congenital hearing loss affects 1 in 1000 newborns, rising in early childhood. Early detection via universal newborn hearing screening, using otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem response, is vital for speech development.
