Survey research on sexual and HIV risk behaviors among African Americans faces significant challenges.

To propose methods for addressing these challenges based on national research experiences.

Discussion of key issues: problem conceptualization, sampling, instrument design, data collection modes, interviewer/respondent characteristics, community resistance, and data analysis.
Drawing upon authors' experiences in conducting national research on Black communities.

Main Results:

Specific challenges in survey research on sexual and HIV risk behaviors among African Americans were identified.
Methods to overcome these obstacles were proposed, drawing from practical research experience.

Conclusions:

Addressing identified issues can significantly enhance the quality of research on AIDS-related behaviors in Black communities.
Integrating behavioral theories and culturally sensitive methodological/analytic approaches is vital for combating the AIDS epidemic.
