Gene conversion and purifying selection of a placenta-specific ERV-V envelope gene during simian evolution

Two human endogenous retrovirus (HERV) envelope genes, ENVV1 and ENVV2, were preserved by purifying selection and gene conversion after entering the primate genome. These HERV genes show placenta-specific expression, suggesting a beneficial host role.
