Diabetic Neuropathy01:22

Diabetic Neuropathy

DefinitionDiabetic neuropathy is nerve damage caused by long-standing diabetes mellitus. It results directly from prolonged high blood sugar levels.PathophysiologyThe pathophysiology of diabetic neuropathy involves both metabolic and vascular disturbances triggered by chronic hyperglycemia.Metabolic injury: Elevated glucose levels activate the polyol pathway within nerve cells, leading to the accumulation of sorbitol and fructose. This increases oxidative stress, disrupts normal nerve...
Disorders of the Nervous Tissue01:28

Disorders of the Nervous Tissue

Nervous tissue is a vital component of the human body's communication system, enabling us to perceive and respond to stimuli. However, like all other tissues, it is vulnerable to disorders and diseases that can significantly impact our neurological functioning.
Homeostatic Imbalances:
Alzheimer's disease manifests as a gradual decline in memory and cognitive abilities, attributed to the buildup of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain.
Parkinson's disease arises from the...

Summary

Malignant mental neuropathy (MMN), a cancer-related nerve issue, often signals advanced disease. Early MMN detection can indicate recurrence, highlighting the need for prompt cancer evaluation.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Malignant mental neuropathy (MMN) is a neurological symptom of cancer affecting the mental nerve.
  • It presents as altered sensation in the lower lip and chin area.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the literature on MMN.
  • Analyze its etiology, pathogeny, clinical features, diagnostic tests, and prognosis.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review of 16 studies.
  • Analysis of 136 patient cases.
  • Review of diagnostic imaging like orthopantomographs and CT scans.

Main Results:

  • Breast cancer and lymphomas were common associated malignancies.
  • Mandibular lesions and skull base tumors were frequent causes.
  • MMN presented as a primary symptom in 27.7% and recurrence in 37.7% of cases.
  • The mandible was the most affected region.

Conclusions:

  • MMN indicates a poor prognosis for cancer patients.
  • High mortality (78.5%) was observed within months of MMN onset.
