Older adults receiving home care are more likely to recognize behavioral health issues if they have a diagnosis, distress, or a family member with a problem. Familiarity with others' issues may aid treatment planning.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Psychiatry
- Public Health
Background:
- Older adults' recognition of behavioral health needs strongly predicts service utilization.
- Understanding these needs in home-based aging service recipients is crucial for effective care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine behavioral health problems in older adults receiving home-based aging services.
- To assess their recognition of these problems and identify associated factors.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional study of 141 older adults receiving home-based aging services.
- Utilized Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, Brief Symptom Inventory-18, and attitudinal scales.
- Assessed behavioral health treatment history and problem recognition.
Main Results:
- 21.9% received Axis I diagnoses (depressive, anxiety, substance); 12.1% had adjustment disorders.
- Problem recognition correlated with Axis I diagnosis, higher distress (BSI-18), and familiarity with others' behavioral health issues.
- Logistic regression showed family/friend history of problems predicted self-recognition.
Conclusions:
- Older adults recognizing behavioral health issues often have diagnoses, distress, or familiarity with others' problems.
- Familiarity with others' issues may improve treatment planning.
- Individuals lacking this familiarity may need additional psychoeducation.
