Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP) strategies show potential for spinal fusion in degenerative diseases. While initial resorption was observed, all patients achieved fusion within six months with no adverse outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • rhBMP-2 combined with PEEK cages and PLIF technique facilitates spinal fusion.
  • Transient osteoclastic activity around the cage is a potential finding but does not impede fusion or cause complications.
  • Long-term monitoring for potential metabolic resorption is advised.
