To investigate the global trajectory and development of advanced nursing practice.
To identify factors influencing the growth of advanced nursing roles internationally.

Documentary analysis of resources from the International Nurse Practitioners/Advanced Practice Nurse Network (INP/APNN).
Data analysis by experienced INP/APNN members, guided by a key informant survey.
Inclusion of 14 countries and three regions across five continents.

Advanced nursing practice is demonstrably developing worldwide.
Key facilitators include the demand for accessible healthcare and advanced nursing education.
