  • On-farm necropsies performed on 1046 female rabbits.
  • Main Results:

    • Median monthly removal risk (MMR) was 9.3% for does (3.4% dead, 5.7% culled) and 5.8% for males.
    • Top culling causes for does: low productivity (1.3%), mastitis (0.5%), poor body condition (0.5%).
    • Top culling causes for males: low productivity (2.0%), abscesses (0.3%), sore hocks (0.3%).
    • Mortality risk increased during gestation, with peaks between days 10-15 and 25-33.
    • Respiratory and digestive tract alterations were common findings in necropsies.

    Conclusions:

    • Reproductive intensification, age at first mating, and kindling interval negatively correlate with MMR.
    • Culling and mortality risks are highest during the first three kindlings for does.
    • Gestation stage significantly impacts mortality risk in breeding does.
    • Respiratory and digestive issues are significant contributors to mortality in female rabbits.
