Subdural placement of intrathecal catheters, though rare, can occur during initial implantation. This can lead to delayed detection of drug delivery issues and requires consideration in pump malfunction diagnostics.

  • Case 2: Intrathecal pain pump catheter initially placed subdural, requiring surgical revision for proper cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) delivery.
  • Both cases highlight delayed diagnosis of catheter malpositioning.

Findings:

  • Intrathecal catheters can enter the subdural space during initial implantation.
  • Subdural catheter placement may not be immediately apparent and can lead to prolonged periods of undetected malfunction.
