Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the association between intake of MVandFA and depression rates in pregnant women.
  • To identify risk factors for depression during pregnancy.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire was administered to 1,314 low-risk pregnant women.
  • Data from 1,277 participants were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression.
  • Depression rates were compared between women who did and did not take MVandFA.

Main Results:

  • The overall prevalence of depression was 8.1%.
  • Women taking MVandFA had a depression rate of 6.9%, compared to 9.4% in those not taking MVandFA (p = 0.11).
  • Family history of depression (adjusted OR 3.7) and premenstrual syndrome (adjusted OR 3.0) were significant risk factors.

Conclusions:

  • Intake of MVandFA was not associated with lower rates of depression during pregnancy.
  • Family history of depression and personal history of premenstrual syndrome are significant risk factors for antenatal depression.
