Calculation of First-Law Quantities II

The first law of thermodynamics establishes that the change in internal energy of a system is given by ΔU = q + w, where q is the heat exchanged, and w is the work performed. For a perfect gas, both internal energy (U) and enthalpy (H) depend solely on temperature. Consequently, for any change of state, whether reversible or irreversible, the internal energy change is determined by integrating the heat capacity at constant volume, and the enthalpy change by integrating the heat capacity at...

¹H NMR: Complex Splitting

A proton M that is coupled to a proton X results in doublet signals for M. However, NMR-active nuclei can be simultaneously coupled to more than one nonequivalent nucleus. When M is coupled to a second proton A, such as in styrene oxide, each peak in the doublet is split into another doublet.
Splitting diagrams or splitting tree diagrams are routinely used to depict such complex couplings. While drawing splitting diagrams, the splitting with the larger coupling constant is usually applied first.

Calculation of First Law Quantities I

Thermodynamic systems undergoing phase transitions or temperature changes experience energy transfer in the form of heat (q) and work (w). For a reversible phase change at constant temperature (T) and pressure (p), the process involves no chemical reaction but results in energy exchange between distinct phases. The heat transferred during this process corresponds to the latent heat of transition, which is the amount of heat energy absorbed or released by a substance when it changes from one...
Interpreting ¹H NMR Signal Splitting: The (n + 1) Rule01:10

Interpreting ¹H NMR Signal Splitting: The (n + 1) Rule

In the AX proton spin system, proton A can sense the two spin states of a coupled proton X, resulting in a doublet NMR signal with two peaks of equal (1:1) intensity. When proton A is coupled to two equivalent protons (AX2 spin system), the spin states of each X can be aligned with or against the external field, creating three possible scenarios. This results in a 1:2:1  triplet signal, where the central peak corresponds to the chemical shift of A and is twice as large or intense as the others.

Atomic Nuclei: Nuclear Spin State Population Distribution

Near absolute zero temperatures, in the presence of a magnetic field, the majority of nuclei prefer the lower energy spin-up state to the higher energy spin-down state. As temperatures increase, the energy from thermal collisions distributes the spins more equally between the two states. The Boltzmann distribution equation gives the ratio of the number of spins predicted in the spin −½ (N−) and spin +½ (N+) states.

Extraction: Partition and Distribution Coefficients

The distribution law or Nernst's distribution law is the law that governs the distribution of a solute between two immiscible solvents. This law, also known as the partition law, states that if a solute is added to the mixture of two immiscible solvents at a constant temperature, the solute is distributed between the two solvents in such a way that the ratio of solute concentrations in the solvents remains constant at equilibrium.
For extracting a solute from an aqueous phase into an organic...

Summary

We prove factorization theorems for exclusive charmonium production in B-meson decay and electron-positron annihilation. These theorems hold for quantum chromodynamics calculations, with specific corrections related to quark masses and energy scales.

Area of Science:

  • Particle Physics
  • Quantum Chromodynamics
  • High Energy Physics

Background:

  • Exclusive two-body charmonium production is a key process in particle physics.
  • Understanding these processes requires advanced theoretical frameworks like quantum chromodynamics (QCD).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline the proofs of factorization theorems for exclusive two-body charmonium production.
  • To determine the validity and limitations of these theorems in different physical scenarios.

Main Methods:

  • All-orders perturbative QCD calculations.
  • Analysis of factorization theorems in B-meson decay and electron-positron annihilation.

Main Results:

  • Factorization theorems are established for exclusive charmonium production.
  • Factorized expressions are valid up to specific orders of corrections: m_c/m_b in B-meson decay and m_c^2/s in e+e- annihilation.

Conclusions:

  • The study confirms the applicability of factorization theorems in exclusive charmonium production.
  • The derived correction orders provide crucial insights into the precision of these theoretical tools.
