Summary

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) does not affect blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats. This study found no impact of IL-2 on the development or maintenance of hypertension in rats, regardless of administration method.

Background:

  • Conflicting reports exist regarding the antihypertensive effects of interleukin-2 (IL-2).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if interleukin-2 (IL-2) administration attenuates the development and maintenance of hypertension.
  • To clarify the conflicting findings on IL-2's effects on blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Main Methods:

  • Spontaneously hypertensive rats (young and adult) received single subcutaneous injections of human recombinant IL-2 (5,000 units/kg).
  • Continuous IL-2 infusion (5,000 and 50,000 units/kg/wk) was administered via osmotic minipumps.
  • Arterial pressure was monitored weekly using the tail-cuff technique.

Main Results:

  • A single dose of IL-2 had no effect on the development of hypertension in young rats.
  • IL-2 administration did not alter established hypertension in adult rats.
  • Continuous IL-2 infusion also failed to impact blood pressure in either young or adult spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Conclusions:

  • Interleukin-2 does not influence the onset or progression of spontaneous hypertension.
  • This study provides strong evidence against the antihypertensive efficacy of IL-2 in this rat model.
  • Further research may be needed to explore other potential roles of IL-2 in cardiovascular health.
