Brain Imaging

Brain imaging technologies provide critical insights into both the structure and function of the human brain, enabling medical professionals and researchers to diagnose, study, and treat neurological disorders or psychiatric disorders more effectively.
These technologies include computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT scans), positron-emission tomography (PET scans),  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Summary

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe and effective therapy for major depression. Further research is needed to establish its efficacy for other psychiatric conditions like PTSD and schizophrenia.

  • Exhaustive literature search of Medline and Embase databases.
  • Inclusion of expert experience and additional references.

Main Results:

  • TMS mechanism of action is increasingly understood.
  • Strong evidence supports TMS safety and tolerability with standard protocols.
  • Efficacy demonstrated for depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Conclusions:

  • Sufficient evidence supports TMS integration into major depression treatment protocols.
  • Further research is warranted for TMS in other psychiatric and non-psychiatric conditions, including tinnitus.
