The tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha)-308 G/A polymorphism was studied in relation to pseudoexfoliation (PEX) glaucoma. Results suggest the TNF-alpha-308 G/A variant may be protective against PEX glaucoma.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology and Genetics
Background:
- Pseudoexfoliation (PEX) glaucoma is a common condition.
- Genetic factors, including polymorphisms in cytokine genes, are implicated in PEX glaucoma development.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha)-308 G/A polymorphism and PEX glaucoma in a Turkish population.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 110 PEX glaucoma patients and 110 healthy controls.
- Genotyping of the TNF-alpha-308 G/A polymorphism using polymerase chain reaction and restriction endonuclease analysis.
Main Results:
- A higher prevalence of the G/G genotype was observed in PEX glaucoma patients (OR=2.88).
- The frequency of the A polymorphic allele was significantly lower in PEX glaucoma patients (3.2%) compared to controls (8.2%, p=0.023).
Conclusions:
- The TNF-alpha-308 G/A genotype does not appear to be associated with an increased risk of PEX glaucoma.
- The -308G/A variant may confer a protective effect against PEX glaucoma.
