Depressive Disorders: Etiology01:27

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.

Depression: Overview

Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...
Self-Discrepancy and Its Effects01:29

Self-Discrepancy and Its Effects

Self-discrepancy theory explains how people compare their actual self to their ideal and ought selves and how mismatches between these self-guides can lead to emotional distress. Developed by E. Tory Higgins, the theory distinguishes among three components of self-concept: the actual self, the ideal self, and the ought self. These refer respectively to how individuals perceive themselves, how they aspire to be, and how they believe they are obligated to be. Emotional well-being, self-esteem,...
Role of Emotions in Social Life01:01

Role of Emotions in Social Life

Emotions play a fundamental role in shaping human experience and interactions. The absence of emotions would render life incomplete and fail to capture the essence of human nature. In social psychology, feelings and moods have been extensively studied due to their profound impact on social life and interpersonal relationships. These affective states influence decision-making, behavior, and social perceptions, making them integral to understanding human interactions.Emotions and Social...
G-protein Coupled Receptors01:21

G-protein Coupled Receptors

G-protein coupled receptors are ligand binding receptors that indirectly affect changes in the cell. The actual receptor is a single polypeptide that transverses the cell membrane seven times creating intracellular and extracellular loops. The extracellular loops create a ligand specific pocket which binds to neurotransmitters or hormones. The intracellular loops holds onto the G-protein.

Summary

Major Depressive Episode significantly impacts role functioning. However, cognitive issues like concentration and attention problems, along with embarrassment, appear to be key mediators of this effect.

Area of Science:

  • Mental Health Research
  • Epidemiology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Major Depressive Episode (MDE) is known to impair role functioning.
  • The specific mechanisms linking MDE to functional impairment require further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the mediating pathways between MDE and role functioning.
  • To identify specific limitations that explain the association between depression and role functioning.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from The European Study of the Epidemiology of Mental Disorders (N=21,425 adults).
  • Employed structural equation modeling to assess mediation by six limitations.
  • Assessed 12-month depression, activity limitations, and role functioning.

Main Results:

  • A strong unadjusted association was found between depression and role functioning.
  • Concentration/attention problems and embarrassment significantly mediated this association.
  • The direct effect of depression on role functioning became non-significant after accounting for these mediators.

Conclusions:

  • Cognitive difficulties and embarrassment are significant mediators of role functioning impairment in MDE.
  • Interventions targeting cognitive function and embarrassment may improve role functioning in individuals with depression.
