Nursing Ethical Principles II

Ethical principles are essential in guiding nurses to fulfill their responsibilities, focusing on the quality of nursing care and decision-making. These principles, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and fidelity, shape the ethical framework within healthcare settings.
Consider the following scenario, which illustrates how these principles are applied in the care of Mr. John, a fifty-year-old teacher diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer.

Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Multiple Sclerosis l: Introduction

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that affects the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. It is an inflammatory demyelinating disorder and a leading cause of neurological disability in young adults.EpidemiologyMS commonly begins between 20 and 40 years of age and is twice as common in women. Its exact cause remains unclear, but genetic susceptibility contributes, with higher risk in first-degree relatives and identical twins. A greater...

Bone Marrow Sampling and Transplants

Bone marrow transplant is a potential cure for several diseases, including cancer and specific genetic disorders. Notably, this procedure is applicable for patients suffering from aplastic anemia, certain types of leukemia, severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID), Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, thalassemia, sickle-cell disease, and certain cancers.
The transplant begins with high doses of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, which aim to destroy the...

Summary

Multiple myeloma patients find confronting their mortality the hardest challenge. This incurable cancer requires nurses to address psychosocial needs alongside physical care.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Hematology
  • Psychosocial Oncology

Background:

  • Multiple myeloma is an incurable blood cancer affecting 1% of new cancer cases, predominantly older adults.
  • Despite research, patient outcomes for multiple myeloma remain poor, with a variable and unpredictable disease course.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To qualitatively explore the impact of multiple myeloma on patients and their families.
  • To identify key challenges faced by individuals diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted 20 in-depth telephone interviews with multiple myeloma patients.
  • Utilized qualitative analysis to identify emergent themes from interview data.

Main Results:

  • The most significant obstacle reported by all interviewed patients was the sudden confrontation with their own mortality.
