Summary

Interstitial radiotherapy using Iodine-125 seeds is a viable treatment for pediatric optic nerve gliomas. This approach, combined with CT-stereotactic biopsy, offers an alternative to traditional methods for these rare brain tumors.

Background:

Optic nerve gliomas are rare pediatric tumors with controversial treatment strategies.
Current treatment options range from observation to aggressive surgical and chemoradiotherapy.
Limited comparative data exists for managing these challenging lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate interstitial radiotherapy with Iodine-125 seeds as a treatment for optic nerve gliomas.
To compare outcomes of interstitial radiotherapy with biopsy-only management.
To present CT-stereotactic biopsy and interstitial irradiation as an alternative therapeutic approach.

Main Methods:

11 patients with optic nerve gliomas underwent interstitial radiotherapy via J-125 seed implantation after histological diagnosis.
A control group of 10 patients received biopsy only for histological confirmation.
CT-stereotactic biopsy was utilized for diagnosis verification prior to irradiation.

Main Results:

The study presents results comparing interstitial radiotherapy with biopsy-only treatment for optic gliomas.
CT-stereotactic biopsy followed by interstitial irradiation is proposed as an alternative therapy.
