    Background:

    • The subclavian glomus, also known as the aortic body, is a chemoreceptor organ.
    • Type I cells are the primary sensory cells within the aortic body.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the ultrastructure and morphometric characteristics of Type I cells in the rabbit subclavian glomus.
    • To analyze the population and characteristics of vesicles within Type I cells.

    Main Methods:

    • Stereological morphometric analysis was employed.
    • Ultrastructural examination of the subclavian glomus tissue was performed.

    Main Results:

    • Type I cells of the subclavian glomus contain numerous electron-opaque vesicles.
    • These vesicles constitute approximately 12% of the cytoplasmic volume.
    • The amine-containing vesicles form a heterogeneous population with a mean diameter of 113.5 nm.

    Conclusions:

    • The heterogeneity in vesicle size suggests the potential storage of different biogenic amines.
    • Variations in vesicle characteristics may reflect different secretion or maturation states.
    • These findings indicate possible additional physiological functions for the glomera.
