Summary

High-intensity endurance exercise training improved exercise tolerance and reduced symptoms in patients with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This approach is safe and effective, even at higher intensities than typically recommended.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of high-intensity, symptom-limited endurance exercise training in patients with moderate to severe COPD.
  • To assess changes in exercise performance and perceived symptoms following the training program.
  • To compare training responses between patients who reached and those who did not reach their anaerobic threshold.

  • 52 patients with moderate to severe COPD underwent a pulmonary rehabilitation program.

    • This study supports the use of intensified exercise protocols within pulmonary rehabilitation for COPD patients.
