Summary

Vietnam War veterans showed increased deaths from external causes and certain cancers. Further analysis suggests some elevated cancer risks in Marines might be due to lower rates in non-Vietnam Marines.

Area of Science:

  • Veterans' health
  • Epidemiology
  • Mortality studies

Background:

  • Previous studies examined Vietnam-era veterans' mortality.
  • The Department of Veterans Affairs has a history of conducting such research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze mortality patterns in Army and Marine Vietnam-era veterans.
  • To compare mortality rates of Vietnam veterans with non-Vietnam veterans.

Main Methods:

  • A proportionate mortality study was conducted on a sample of 62,068 veterans (1965-1984).
  • Data included deaths from external causes, laryngeal cancer, lung cancer, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Main Results:

  • Army Vietnam veterans had higher deaths from external causes, laryngeal, and lung cancer.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Marine Vietnam veterans showed elevated external cause and homicide deaths.
  • Previously noted lung cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma excesses in Marines may be due to lower rates in non-Vietnam Marines.
  • Conclusions:

    • Vietnam veterans experienced specific excess mortality risks.
    • Further investigation is needed to understand the etiology of observed mortality patterns.
    • The comparison group significantly influences the interpretation of risk in veteran studies.
